Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation

Pelvic Therapy in Melrose, Keystone Heights, Starke & Crescent City, FL

Pelvic floor rehabilitation is a specialized type of physical therapy that works with the muscles of the pelvic floor to treat dysfunction in the pelvis and abdomen. Pelvic therapy consists of exercises to strengthen or relax the pelvic floor, manual therapy techniques to reduce tension in the pelvic floor, pelvis and abdomen, and lifestyle modifications to address dysfunction. The pelvic floor muscles and connective tissue in the pelvis, such as ligaments and fascia, work together to support urinary and bowel function, sexual function, and provide support for the pelvic and abdominal contents as well as provide stability for the rest of the body.

Pelvic therapy can be used to treat urinary and fecal incontinence, constipation, pelvic pain, prolapse, sexual dysfunction, diastasis recti, and many other conditions affecting the pelvis and abdomen.

During your treatment session, your therapist will take past medical history, discuss symptoms associated with your current diagnosis, and perform an assessment of your pelvic region including posture, biomechanics of your spine and pelvis, range of motion and strength testing as well as mobility of your abdomino-pelvic muscles, fascia and organs. If appropriate, a gentle, internal pelvic exam may be conducted in order to evaluate tone and strength of your pelvic floor muscles and determine any painful structures within the pelvis.
